Solo trekkers are allowed in restricted areas of Nepal

Effective March 22, 2026, Nepal permits solo foreign trekkers in restricted areas, provided they hire a licensed guide through a registered agency. These updated regulations also introduce online permit application options and a maximum limit of seven trekkers per guide .The Department of Immigration has introduced new provisions allowing solo foreign trekkers to obtain permits for trekking in Nepal's restricted areas, in a move aimed at promoting tourism and improving service delivery. Issuing a public notice, the department said foreign nationals trekking in designated restricted areas across 13 districts must obtain a trekking permit through the department. The permit issuance system has now been streamlined through an online platform to make the process faster, simpler and more service-friendly.Previously, trekking permits in restricted areas were issued only to groups, requiring solo trekkers to find companions. Following complaints from the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) and other tourism stakeholders about inconvenience and its impact on tourism promotion, the department decided to allow permits for individual trekkers as well. The decision was made on March 22. However, the department has made it mandatory for all applicants-including solo trekkers-to apply through a registered trekking agency and be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide. The concerned agency will bear full responsibility for emergency rescue operations, while other provisions will be governed by existing laws.To ensure safety and better monitoring in restricted areas, the department has also set a limit of a maximum of seven trekkers per guide in a group. In another reform, the department has revised its system requiring a valid Nepal visa number at the time of application. Foreign trekkers can now apply for permits using their visa application number (submission ID) from their home country, easing the process for advance planning.
